FAFSA: What It Is, And What It’s Not
The FAFSA, or Free Application for Federal Student Aid (see the first letter of each word), is just that: it’s a free application to apply for Federal Student Aid.
The FAFSA is not free money. But, it is a free application. See the difference? It’s just a simple application you use to apply for government-funded loans, like an application you use to apply for college, purchase a car, or sign up for cell phone service.
While it is true you could qualify for a small percentage of monies that don’t require repayment; most colleges have tuition costs that exceed what those types of grants (often called Pell grants) can cover.
Simply put, the most significant percentage of your student loan, in most cases, will need to be paid back with interest. The FAFSA is merely an application that the government uses to see if you qualify for any of these programs, including Federal Student Loans.
