Upon dispensing a prescribed medication for a patient, they package, label, and check it for accuracy with a pharmacist before giving it to the patient. Besides processing insurance claims, tracking inventory, and filing paperwork, they could also assist pharmacists in administrative tasks.
It is common for pharmacy technicians to work in retail shops, hospitals, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities. Depending on where they work, they may need to work nights, weekends, and holidays. They fill and package prescriptions, as well as work with pharmacists and other health care providers during the course of the day.
There are many specialties that pharmacy technicians can practice in, including academia, community, and government, or in specialized fields such as critical care, oncology, and pediatrics.
A pharmacy technician can expect an annual median salary of $40,960 in Hawai’i, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
